Re: Legend of Korra
Not what I expected. Which is funny, considering that I already knew who all the characters were, what the general plot was, and cosplayed Korra back before it became cool. (And you best believe I’m gonna bring out that costume again for this summer.)
It’s not the old Avatar. I dunno how kids are gonna react to the Amon/Equalist business, because it reflects some real, relevant issues in our society—just replace “bender” with “[insert socioeconomic majority group here]” and “non-bender” with a minority. The seriousness of the series so far is kind of disappointing, but I’m just gonna treat it like a separate entity, rather than measuring each scene up against its predecessor.
Korra falls short on what I hoped for, but the American public is deeeefinitely not ready for a lesbian heroine (with biceps) to change the gender bias, so I’m not complaining. Yeah, I expected her to be a little more overtly badass. But they’re spinning her story that she’s entirely out of her element in Republic City, and y’know what? It works. Instead of being a perfect bender, she’s good at what she’s been trained for and hilariously awkward at anything that doesn’t come naturally. It’s totally relate-able.
As for shipping, lemme put it this way: all the drops of water from my leaking boiler = all the fucks that I honestly do not give. Yes, she ends up with Mako, we know. Call me when they actually have chemistry.
All in all, I’m just plain curious to see how it and the community evolves, whether it’ll make a splash in the grand scheme of things.
